The city of Rastatt promotes bicycle traffic. To this end, the network of bike paths is to be expanded across the board and existing gaps are to be closed. For years now, the city has taken cycling into account in its planning for every road construction project. As a result, cyclists can now ride safely on dedicated bike lanes on many stretches of road in Rastatt. With its annual participation in the nationwide "Stadtradeln" (city cycling) campaign and the offer of rental bikes, the city also promotes the switch from car to bicycle. As part of the mobility concept, the city of Rastatt is also currently analyzing the cycling network in order to expand and improve connecting routes.
Rental bikes/KVV nextbike
Rastatt can be explored in an environmentally friendly way on two wheels by renting a bike. The KVV.nextbike bike-sharing system complements the bus, train and car-sharing services in Rastatt. A total of 30 nextbike rental bikes are available at five stations in Rastatt:
- Station forecourt
- Culture place
- Upper Kaiserstrasse
- City Hall Herrenstraße
- Fruchthalle Gallery
Borrowing the bikes works very simply: users must first register free of charge via the KVV.nextbike homepage or the nextbike app. The number of the respective bike is then entered into the app or the QR code of the bike is scanned. The frame lock then opens automatically and the bike tour can start. The rental bikes can be returned at all five stations in Rastatt. Simply park the bike and press down the lever on the frame lock. A short beep confirms the successful return. Further information: www.kvv-nextbike.de
Rent bike boxes
The Verkehrsgesellschaft Rastatt offers 70 lockable bicycle boxes for rent at the Rastatt train station (Note: Due to the current redesign of the Rastatt train station, only a part of the boxes is currently offered). The bike boxes are lockable mini-garages that protect bikes and accessories from damage, theft and weather. The rental price is 14 euros per month and is debited from the account by direct debit. The rental period is at least three months. For more information, call 07222 972-4040 or visit www.vera-rastatt.de
Loading and repair columns for bicycles
E-bike owners can recharge their bikes conveniently and free of charge at the two charging stations in the upper Kaiserstraße behind the St. Alexander's Church and at the Bernhardus Fountain. The charging compartments are locked by a self-selected PIN and can be opened again with the same. No prior registration is required. In addition, there are three bicycle repair stations in Rastatt: at New Britain Park in Kaiserstraße, at Kulturplatz near the district administration office, and at the Regiomove port at the Rastatt train station.
Since 2020, the city of Rastatt has participated annually in the nationwide "Stadtradeln" competition. On the one hand, the campaign is intended to promote a switch from car to bicycle. And on the other hand, it sets an example for climate protection. Within 21 days, the aim is to cover as many distances as possible in a climate-friendly way by bicycle.
2022, 30 teams from Rastatt participated with 278 cyclists. The participants covered a total of 65,617 kilometers during the campaign period. Around 2,000 more kilometers than last year. Rastatt plans to participate in the city cycling event again in 2023. The campaign will then be extended to the entire district of Rastatt so that as many citizens as possible pedal for the climate.
Karlsruhe-Rastatt cycle path
A high-speed bike path will be built between Karlsruhe and Rastatt in the coming years. The approximately 21.5-kilometer route will run from Karlsruhe's southwestern city to the Rastatt train station. The cycle expressway is intended to increase traffic safety for cyclists and enable speedy cycling between the cities.
The aim is to make cycling more attractive, especially for commuters. In coordination with the city of Karlsruhe and the city of Rastatt, the Karlsruhe Regional Council is responsible for the preliminary planning up to the definition of the route. Currently, the planners of the Regional Council are working out various routes on the basis of the feasibility study. The aim is to reach a decision on the preferred route in spring 2023. Among other things, the environmental impact of the project will be taken into account. More information is available here.
