Protecting Rastatt and its inhabitants from a 100-year flood is the aim of the Murg Rastatt flood protection, dam rehabilitation and water ecology project, or HWS Murg Rastatt for short. The aim is to create flood protection that protects Rastatt from a flood that can statistically occur every 100 years. the planning phase of the project began in 2023. planning should be completed in 2026. The planning will then undergo a planning approval procedure.
The duration of the planning approval procedure depends on numerous factors and can only be roughly estimated on the basis of comparable procedures. As soon as the legally binding planning approval decision has been issued, the implementation planning must be drawn up and construction work commissioned. Construction is expected to begin in 2029. The project will be implemented and financed by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and the city of Rastatt.
Past flood events and flood protection projects
In the city of Rastatt, the water level of the Murg has reached the upper edge of the dams and even beyond on several occasions during major flooding events. This resulted in flooding with considerable material damage in parts of the urban area.
In order to take protective measures, the city commissioned a feasibility study in 2007 and 2008. WALD + CORBE Consulting GmbH examined protection measures inside and outside the city area. The result: foreshore removal and dam raising in the urban area as well as a dam relocation north of the city are necessary. This resulted in the "Rastatt flood protection and ecology project", or HÖP for short, as the first building block. The HÖP has been completed since 2014.
Planning for flood protection against 100-year floods
With the Murg Rastatt HWS project, further measures from the feasibility study are now to be implemented. The necessary measures are divided into five sub-projects:
Sub-project A: Dam relocation and foreshore removal
- Implemented with the HÖP since 2014.
Sub-project B: Strengthening stability and height compensation at the Murg dams
Sub-project C: Strengthening the stability of the Murg dams
Subproject D: Water ecology measures
- Improvement of the aquatic ecology along the Murg in the area from the railroad bridge to the highway bridge.
Sub-project E: Fault height compensation on the commercial canal
NOTE: The Murg Rastatt flood protection, dam rehabilitation and aquatic ecology project is currently in the planning phase. The project website is therefore under construction and will be updated regularly.
