Rastatt is green. In the core city alone, over 17,000 urban trees provide fresh air and improve the urban climate. At the same time, trees serve as a habitat for animals and other plants. The trees in the inner area of the city have therefore been under special protection since 2022 - both trees on private and public land. This is regulated by the tree protection statutes (PDF) (75 KB).
Questions and answers about the tree protection statute
Where does the tree protection statute apply?
Which trees are specially protected?
What is forbidden?
In what cases may trees be cut down?
If a tree poses a danger to people or if the tree is visibly diseased, it may be felled after approval by the city council. Furthermore, felling or trimming is permitted, among other things, if a permissible development of the property would not be possible or would only be possible under considerable restrictions.
Does a replacement tree need to be planted?
How do property owners obtain a permit to cut or prune trees?
Both private property owners and construction companies must first submit an application for exemption to the city's Ecology and Greenery Customer Service Division. The application form can be downloaded or requested by email at: oekologie-und-gruen@rastatt.de.
What about tree maintenance activities?
Professional tree maintenance activities of a small scale are still permitted, but must be documented and submitted to the Ecology and Greenery client department.
