A secure, reliable and powerful digital infrastructure is the cornerstone of digitalization and a prerequisite for digital transformation. The city administration's goal is therefore clearly defined: The whole of Rastatt is to be connected to a fiber optic network. In the long term, all households and companies in the city area should receive a fiber optic connection.
According to the current status of the Federal Network Agency's broadband atlas, 67% of Rastatt households already have broadband availability of more than 1,000 Mbit/s, and 41% of all addresses in Rastatt have a fiber optic connection.
Measures implemented
- 2011: Supply parts of the city center with fiber optics. Joint fiber optic pilot project with Telekom.
- Fiber optic expansion in commercial areas and fiber optic connection of schools in Rastatt. Made possible by the subsidized broadband expansion in the district. Financial participation by the town.
- 2020: Rastatt draws up the broadband expansion master plan. With financial support from federal funds.
The aim of the further expansion strategy is to advance the cooperation with telecommunications providers for self-economic expansion. The fiber optic expansion is to be carried out privately without public funding.
Current measures
Fiber optic expansion in the Rieddörfer villages
The expansion of the fiber optic network in the Ried villages is another important step towards full fiber optic coverage and fast Internet throughout the entire city. To this end, the city has concluded a cooperation agreement with the provider "Deutsche Glasfaser" for the expansion of a fiber optic infrastructure (FTTH - fiber to the home) in the districts of Plittersdorf, Wintersdorf and Ottersdorf.
As enough households were won over to the project, the network is now being expanded. As of November 2024, the Plittersdorf district will be expanded. Further information and the current project status can be found on the Deutsche Glasfaser website.
Expansion in the rest of the city
The city of Rastatt signed a cooperation agreement with the telecommunications company "Deutsche GigaNetz" on November 6, 2023. The company will take over the fiber optic expansion in those parts of Rastatt's city center that are not yet connected to fiber optics. The expansion will also take place in the districts of Rauental, Niederbühl and Förch.
Before the expansion of the fiber optic network begins, "Deutsche GigaNetz" will conduct a pre-marketing campaign. The interest of households will be surveyed.
The fiber optic network will be laid throughout the city. Households that have expressed an interest will receive a home connection.
